Many of Liverpool’s stars impressed yet again during their pre-season win against Yokohama F.

Marinos.

The Reds concluded their summer tour of Asia with a 3-1 win in Japan, with many of their new signings and youngsters impressing yet again.

Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha got on the scoresheet, while record-signing Florian Wirtz also scored his first goal for the club in what was another dazzling display.

The German seemed as though he would come into the team and replace Dominik Szoboszlai, with the Hungarian most likely to see his minutes reduced next season.

However, against Yokohama Marinos, and in the other pre-season friendlies for that matter, the 24-year-old excelled and put in a display that is worth taking note of.

He may sometimes go under the radar but Arne Slot will definitely be taking note of his contributions, with the Dutchman having a real selection dilemma on his hands.

Pre-season is a time for experimentation and trying players out in different positions, something Szoboszlai has been tasked to do.

He has impressed in his usual position, at right-back and now a little further back as a central midfielder, proving to his manager how multi-faceted he is.

He produced several passes that broke through the defensive line and caused problems, won his challenges in midfield and eliminated danger from Yokohama Marinos’ counter-attacks.

The engine that the Hungarian has on him certainly helps him get about the pitch and despite not fully fit yet, he does not look far off it.

Wirtz has also impressed and will likely hold down the number 10 position, but Szoboszlai has proven that he will not simply be shoved to the side and forced to watch from afar.

Wherever that may be on the pitch, the Hungarian has seriously staked a case as to why he should be playing week in, week out and Slot will need to have a long and hard think on the way back from Japan about what he does with him.

It would certainly be a surprise if Liverpool did not sell some midfielders this summer as the list of options they have appears endless.

Ryan Gravenberch will likely be the regular holding midfielder again, although Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton could also add cover.

Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Szoboszlai will be competing for the other two spots, with these likely to be taken by Alexis Mac Allister and Wirtz.

One thing that makes them all a good option, however, is versatility, although Szoboszlai is probably the one capable of playing in more positions than most, potentially giving him the upper hand.
